The Vital Role of Soil Health in Food Security
25/07/2023
When we think about food security, images of fertile fields and abundant harvests often come to mind. Yet, beneath these flourishing crops lies a silent hero - healthy soil. Soil health is the cornerstone of our food security, serving as the very foundation upon which our sustenance depends. However, the state of our soils in the European Union is a cause for concern - currently, less than 40% of EU soils are in good condition.

To safeguard our future and ensure a thriving agricultural landscape, we must take action. That's why we're excited to introduce the new Soil Monitoring Law as a vital component of the EU Soil Strategy for 2030. Our goal is clear: by 2050, we aim to see all soils within the EU restored to a state of robust health.

Soil Health: The Bedrock of Food Security
Healthy soils are not just dirt; they are living ecosystems teeming with microorganisms, fungi, and organisms that work harmoniously to provide essential services to our environment. These services include nutrient cycling, water filtration, and carbon storage, all of which are indispensable for agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.

The EU Soil Observatory: A Window into Soil Health
To embark on this ambitious journey toward soil restoration, we encourage you to explore the EU Soil Observatory. This dynamic platform provides valuable insights into soil degradation patterns across the EU. By understanding the extent of soil issues, we can better target our efforts and resources towards revitalizing these essential ecosystems.
